End in sight

July, which is usually known for holiday weather, is almost over. Luckily, I'd almost say. July was the first month since two years I had only duties. Although, if everybody else is on holidays, working is somehow more relaxed, too, because you hardly get new tasks. So I worked quite well on my thesis. I bought a book called "Ontology Matching" which seems to be the only book of its kind. And I really think it is, because already in the first chapters are some obviouse misspells in formulas. However, it is a treasure for theory part and defining my methology. My self set task for the weekend is schematic sketch of my work. I even started to program, therefore my master thesis is even more practical than my earlier diploma thesis, - although it should have been the other way around. Well, as long as it is fun, I don't care. And indeed it is a little bit fun.
I also worked further on the project I meant to work at, of course. My program was running so far, but without any use, yet. This week they connected it spontaneously to the main software and it was running fine immediately. Wow. Although I know it is no great deal, I was surprised everything fitted.
The rest of the weeks is not so interesting to communicate. Highlights are sports and Spanish courses. Spanish course is even the highlight of the week. The people are nice and the language is - so - beautiful. Grammar is similar to Laten what I am supposed to remember from highschool. It is a compact course with 2,5 full hours every Wednesday. Since I have to work whole July also in the early morning shifts for my translation job, Wednesday became very late. Working from 6 to 6, one hour eating and power nap and afterwards Spanish until 10. I hope we can as soon as possible the conversation courses. And the more I learn, the more I want to go to Spain for practice.
So, weeks pass and middle of August is coming near when some old erasums memories are going to be refreshed. Older than those I refhreshed during the past months. First I will go to a Phil's birthday barbeque and one week later it is already that Solène and Sebastian from my 1st and 2nd semester are coming to Aken. And as I heard some more people from the 1st semester might join, too. For the following months nothing is fixed. There are only options I hope some will become certain. At least in November I guess that I will go back to Sundsvall for a few days presenting my thesis. And I am grow carefully the hope of still doing my bike trip to the Dutch sea, but that depends on workload's and contract's mercy. But before that I have to let my bike checked. Since I only used it for day tours, I doubt it is appropriate for a long tour. The highest two gears scratch and for flat land they are even too small. I already use them for hills, but at flat land I sometimes hardly can gain speed. And, I discovered yesterday, I need lights and reflectors. I cycled through the wood at night and I could not see anything. Luckily I was not cycling alone so I could at least guess the way in the spotlight of the other one.
I also planned to cycle today through the cycle paths between Aken and Maastricht, but it seems like the long promised rain falls will arrive here any minute. According to the forecast, it stayes like that until Monday. Great. Sounds like enjoying DVDs...

I'm not an addict - am I?

My first month as full time employee is over and things are going pretty well. Work is currently quite easy going. I have time to improve things. Most likely it will be worthless when the think-tanks behind the projects create new requirements, but that's ok, because I now get salary. The freshly graduated students I know all go the same prestige-track: first they buy a new computer. I did it, too, for my old one was barely working since I drowned it once during a legen-dary story (Hälsningar till Mainz, lil åpa). Considering the law of freshly graduated students a flat television in a minimum size of 60" will follow, right after a new by-far-too-expensive car and right before the super-duper dolby soround audio system with playstation 3 which gets lost in the living hall of my new huge single-appartment. I - dont - think - so. Instead I asked for holidays and I hope to get a response, soon. If everything goes well, I will escape the summer for two weeks in July. As I said, wo...

Perfect Situation

As constant readers know, I went on a last big trip before I start working in less than a week. I went to Nicaragua for a little bit more than 4 weeks starting 10 minutes before the new year. The trip was... intense. I missed the biggest attractions, but met a lot of nice people I hope to stay in contact with. There were treasure moments as well as worst moments. But still, it was the absolute right decision to go. Like a short movie of life, if you like. And since my job is supposed to give me a lot of freedom, it for sure won't have been my last big thing for this year. The amount of new stories is intense. By far too much for a blog. So I suppose, if you want to hear them, we have to meet. Since Christmas market in Aachen is closed since more than one month, I suggest a hot chocolate instead of Glühwein. If you make it to stay over night, we can exchange the chocolate with a few cold beers. And if I can trust my flatmates there should be some of this liqueur left :-) Costa Rica...

Mijn nederlandse week (deel 1)

Monday started in chaos. Somehow I counted on receiving my salary that day. But I did not and at lunch time I had to face the high probability not having enough money for a ticket to Den Haag or Amsterdam. While cursing myself for every beer from the Friday before and loosing almost my mind I could arrange some euros for a ticket. Somehow, all such stuff was a lot more relaxed in Sweden. But once I set in the train everything was alright. Because I started earlier in the morning at work I could leave earlier. And once Ward, Silvia and Maritha found the right railway at the trainstation my evening was fixed. We went for dinner at Scheveningen and drove around in Den Haag. Tuesday started early in Amsterdam. We picked up Isa and David from Schiphol airport and traveled further to the city. Ward and Maritha showed us around and Isa, Silvia and David moved into their hostel. The hostel was more a barrack. The beds must be some Wehrmacht-relics. New furnitures are not possible to bring in ...
