Fietspaden

On Sunday morning my fridge made me clear, that I would have to make some grocery shopping, if I wanted to choose what to eat. But in Germany, shops are closed on Sundays. Therefore and in order to break my July routine, I used the wonderful weather to make a small bike tour to the Netherlands. But once I reached Vaals I liked cycling so much that I decided to make first a tour and then go shopping on my way back. I stayed in the Netherlands near the Belgium border, first cycling a signed fietspad. But the signs were all along the streets, so I skipped the path after a while and followed some numbered pathes.
The Dutch cycle path system is quite smart. In Germany every path has an own number from its beginning to its end. If you cycle track 14 you know where it starts and where it ends after for example 30 km. In the Netherlands the cycle paths themselves are not assigned to numbers, but their crosspoints. The signs on the track only show you which next crosspoints you can reach in what direction. And once you reach such a crosspoint you can check on a map for the next number. Thanks to that system, behind Vaals lies a real web of cycle paths. And this web does not relay on the streets but uses also small streets between fields.
I was cycling around, enjoying landscape and view, but after a while I felt that midday sun (my tour took from 12 to 15 o'clock) combined with almost no breakfast were not the best preparation. And fun alone could not bring me far that day. It was so hot that even the wind wath not refreshing but warm. And because I stayed close to the borders, there were hills everywhere. All the time I had to climb slowly a hill, without any shadow. Therefore I decided at one point I should spare my reserves and finally cycle grocery shopping. I still avoided the big streets and finally found even the signed path from Aken to Maastricht. I followed it back to Aken and it is quite pretty. Much nicer than the big street I took in beginning of May. I really liked the new way. Instead leading along streets, it went through some smaller communities and valley back to Aken. Very pretty, but once I reached Aken I realized that I did not come across one single supermarket. I decided that I can also have something else than bread for breakfast on Monday morning and went on back home.

Mijn nederlandse week (deel 2)

I skipped work on Friday. I would have been the only one at work and I had already finished every lonely job the week before when my supervisor has been sick. I made some shopping and recovered in bed from Queensday. In the evening I went out with Ulrich. In the third pub we met two friends of him and continued with them our pub tour. I finally get to know the locations. It is quite embarrasing. As Ulrich kept asking me "What have you done all the years, if you do not know these pubs?", I really asked myself how I could have missed the basics. Well, I never has been in Aachen in the weekends and during the week I studied. Two sides. The combination of both started in Sweden. But now I even have an idea what to show people who would come for a visit to Aachen (just call me). While I've been in the Netherlands my bike has been brought to Aachen. Finally. I was planning this since the first week I got to Aachen 4 years ago, but I always wanted to keep the bike at my parents ...

MFG

I think, I had a first day that is usual for a first day in computer business. Of course, I was 20 mintues too late, because the village of the company was surprisingly bigger than one street and I ended up somewhere in nowhere. Luckily Micha could pick me up. What a start. Next getting a card at the entrance. I am not in the system, so I get a one-day entrance card. Maybe tomorrow I am already registered. Afterwards I met a lot of people, learned a lot of names. At Atos you call each other with the first name (not so usual for distance-loving Germany). And now I have an idea why they hired me. I think I met 50 people, but they had only 10 different names. Maybe they hire people because of their names. Almost everybody seems to be called Wolfgang, Peter, Stefan, Michael, and - of course - Markus. Getting to know a lot of people also means to learn about a lot of different projects. And a lot of technical terms I never heard of before. Until 12 my head was full of technical terms and cr...

High Fens

During my morning translation shift I got mail from INCAS about a hiking trip through the High Fens in Belgium. The High Fens are unique marshlands at the border between Germany and Belgium. The hiking trip was announced to be 25 km, guided by ranger through a restricted area and with the requirement for a second pair of shoes, because the first one will be uncomfortable after having crossed marshland and a river. That sounded exact like a trip I would like, so I studied Monday morning at home in order to be on time at the registration board. INCAS is something you can compare with the International Committee in Sundsvall. They organize trips. They have their office in the same building as the Internation Office, and they are sponsored by the international office of the RWTH Aachen ad well as Fachochschule Aachen. But in contrast to International Committee in Sundsvall INCAS offers are for all students. Not limited to Erasmus students, Free Movers or national students, but they are f...
